음악회

 

어제는 음악회에 다녀왔다.

 

아내가  얼마 전에 음악회 티킷을 구입했다는 말을 했다.

단순히 동네에서 열리는 소박하기 그지없는 연주회라 지레짐작을 하고 별 기대는 하지 않았다.

그리고 시간이 흘러 어제 바로 그 연주회가 열렸다.

장소는 Brooklyn 다운타운 가까이에 있는 St. Joseph Co-Cathedral에서였다.

아무런 지식도 흥미도 없이 아내가 가자는 대로 마지못해  다녀온 음악회였다.

 

레퍼토리는 슈베르트의 교향곡 9번 "Great"였다.

솔직히 말해서 슈베르트의 교향곡이 아홉 개나 된다는 것을 어제 처음 알았다.

이 곡의 별명인 **"그레이트(Great)"**는 **슈베르트의 교향곡 6번 C장조(작품번호 D.589, "작은 C장조")**와 구별하기 위해 붙여진 것으로, ‘위대한’이라는 뜻이라기보다는 단순히 ‘큰 C장조 교향곡’이라는 의미에서 사용되었다고 한다.

 

아내는 어제 하루 종일 만두소를 만들어 김치 만두를 빚었다.

그리고 김밥도 만들었다.

음악회가 열리는 장소 근처에 딸 Stella와 아들 Andrew가 살고 있는데

음악회에 가는 김에 엄마가 만든 음식을 맛보게 해 주려는 

아내의 마음이 하루 종일 집 안을 채웠다.

 

오후 여섯 시에 집을 출발해서 Andrew 집에 들렀다.

손자가 잠든 사이에 아들 며느리가 모두 나와 우리를 맞았다.

만두와 김밥을 전해주고 다시 Stella 집으로 출발했다.

우리 집에서 거리는 12 마일 정도밖에 되지 않지만 차로 운전을 해서 가려면 한 시간을 잡아야 한다.

그만큼 가는 길의 교통 사정이 복잡하다는 말이다.

 

Stella에게 들려 만두와 김밥을 전한 뒤 

다시 바쁜 마음으로 연주회장으로 갔다.

Stella가 사는 곳으로부터 걸어서 10 분 거리에 있는 연주회장에 도착해 보니

입장을 위해 사람들이 줄을 서 있었다.

성당은 겉에서 언뜻 보아도 아름답다는 생각이 들었다.

 

주차를 위해 주변을 몇 바퀴 돌았지만 빈자리를 찾을 수 없었다.

마음을 바꾸어 Stella 집 근처로 가서  Fulton Street에 주차를 했다.

그리고 연주회장까지 달렸다.

연주회 10 분 전에 도착했다.

 

성당 내부는 아름답고 화려했다.

좌석은 사람들로 빼곡하게 채워졌다.

연주 시작 전 지휘자 다니엘이 본당 신부를 소개했고

신부는 성당 소개를 곁들인 인사를 하며

주일 미사에도 신자들이 이렇게 많이 오면 좋겠다는 농담 같은 진담을 해서

관중들에게 웃음을 선사했다.

시쳇말로 웃픈 상황이었다.

 

금관악기와 첼로, 더블 베이스 연주자만 의자에 앉고

나머지는 모두 서서 연주를 준비하고 있었다.

연주자의 복장은 거의 모두 캐주얼이었다.

*오케스트라 편성은 대충 보니

제1 바이올린 7, 제2 바이올린 6, 비올라 6, 첼로 5, 더블 베이스 3,

프렌치 혼 2, 클라리넷 2, 오보 2, 바순 2, 트럼펫 2, 트롬본 2, 

그리고 팀파니, 이렇게 40여 명으로 구성되었다.

 

처음 듣는 슈베르트의 교향곡 9 번은 마치 베토벤의 그것과 비슷하다는 느낌을 갖게 했다.

앞자리에 앉은 덕에 연주자의 표정과 미세한 소리,

특히 현악기의 소티에를 비롯한 여러 연주기법을 통해 들리는 소리까지 듣고 볼 수 있어서

끝까지 긴장감을 가지고 연주에 참여할 수 있었다.

 

기대하지 않고 갔다가 여운이 짙은 기억을 담아 온 연주회였다.

다니엘 진은 이스라엘 출신의 지휘자, 프로듀서, 바이올리니스트로, 예루살렘 음악무용 아카데미(Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance)에서 학업을 마친 후 뉴욕과 이스라엘에서 다양한 음악 프로젝트를 이끌어 왔습니다. 그는 카네기 홀에서 이스라엘 피아니스트 아디 노이하우스(Adi Neuhaus)의 데뷔 공연을 프로듀싱하는 등 다양한 규모와 형태의 공연을 제작하며 독특한 스타일을 구축해 왔습니다. ​

포트 그린 오케스트라는 브루클린의 세인트 조셉 공동 대성당(Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph)에서 시즌별로 공연을 개최하며, 매번 매진을 기록하는 등 큰 인기를 얻고 있습니다. 이들은 공연의 분위기와 드레스 코드를 제안하여 관객들이 보다 적극적으로 참여할 수 있도록 유도하며, 평균 관객 연령은 약 35세로 비교적 젊은 층의 관심을 받고 있습니다. ​

Yesterday, I attended a concert.

My wife had mentioned some time ago that she had purchased tickets for a concert.

I assumed it would be a simple, modest performance in our neighborhood and did not expect much.

Time passed, and yesterday, the concert finally took place.

The venue was St. Joseph Co-Cathedral, near downtown Brooklyn.

With no knowledge or particular interest, I reluctantly accompanied my wife as she wished.

The repertoire was Schubert's Symphony No. 9, "Great."

Honestly, I only learned yesterday that Schubert had composed as many as nine symphonies.

The nickname "Great" was given to this symphony to distinguish it from Schubert's Symphony No. 6 in C Major (D.589, "Little C Major"). Rather than implying "greatness," the name simply refers to the "larger C Major symphony."

Yesterday, my wife spent the entire day preparing dumpling filling and making kimchi dumplings.

She also made kimbap.

Since our daughter, Stella, and son, Andrew, live near the concert venue, she wanted to take the opportunity to share the homemade food with them.

Her love and care filled our home throughout the day.

At 6 PM, we left home and stopped by Andrew’s house.

While our grandson was asleep, our son and daughter-in-law greeted us.

We dropped off the dumplings and kimbap and then headed to Stella’s place.

Although the distance from our home was only about 12 miles, it required an hour of driving due to heavy traffic.

After delivering the dumplings and kimbap to Stella, we hurried to the concert hall.

The venue was just a 10-minute walk from Stella’s home, and when we arrived, people were already lined up to enter.

Even from the outside, the cathedral appeared beautiful.

We circled the area multiple times searching for parking but could not find an empty spot.

Changing plans, we parked on Fulton Street near Stella’s home and ran to the venue.

We arrived just 10 minutes before the concert began.

The cathedral’s interior was grand and ornate.

The seats were packed with people.

Before the performance started, the conductor, Daniel, introduced the parish priest, who greeted the audience and humorously remarked that he wished Sunday Mass attracted as many attendees as the concert.

It was both amusing and a little bittersweet.

Only the brass players, cellists, and double bassists were seated, while the rest stood in preparation for the performance.

Most of the musicians were dressed casually.

The orchestra was composed of approximately 40 musicians: 7 first violins, 6 second violins, 6 violas, 5 cellos, 3 double basses, 2 French horns, 2 clarinets, 2 oboes, 2 bassoons, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, and timpani.

Listening to Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 for the first time, I felt a resemblance to Beethoven’s symphonies.

Sitting near the front, I could observe the musicians' expressions and hear the subtle nuances of their playing, including various string techniques such as sautillé.

This allowed me to stay fully engaged throughout the performance.

I had arrived with low expectations but left with lasting impressions.
