*리투아니아의 우주피스 공화국

리투아니아의 수도인 빌니우스를 정처 없이(우리가 보통 여행할 때 이런 방식을 선택한다.) 헤매고 다닐 때

우연히 다리 하나를 발견했다.

다리는 차가 한 방향에 한 대씩 지나다닐 수 있는, 지나치게 인색할 정도로 폭이 좁았다 

그리고 차도 옆으로 사람들이 지나다닐 수 있는 인도가 있었는데

다리 중간에서 양 쪽 방향에서 오던 사람들이 만나면 어느 한쪽은 차도로 내려와야 항 정도였다.

그러나 그것도 별 문제가 되지는 않는 것 같았는데, 차량의 통행이 그리 빈번하지 않기 때문이다.

다리 밑으로는 개울물이 흐르고 있었는데 나중에 알아보니 개울물은 '빌넬레 강'이었다.

서울의 한강이나 뉴욕의 허드슨강에 익숙한 나로서는

올림픽 게임에서 넓이뛰기 선수가 도움닫기를 해서 전력으로 뛰면

'나의 해방일지'의 주인공처럼 그렇게 뛰어 다른 쪽에 도달할 수 있는 냇물이

강으로 불린다는 사실을 이해할 수 없었다.

다리 양쪽의 난간에는 다양한 크기와 모양의 자물통이 빼곡하게 채워져 있었다.

연식이 제법 되어 녹인 슨 것도 여럿 보였다.

그 자물통을 채운 당사자들은 여전히 서로가 꼭 연결되어 있을까 라는 생각을 하며 다리를 건넜다.

다리는 다른 두 세계를 연결해 주는 통로이다.

다리를 건너면 나타나는 세계는 다리 저 편의 세상과는 무언가 달라도 달랐다.

색안경을 끼고 양지에 있다 그늘에 들어온 느낌이 들었다.

다리 저 쪽의 세상은 오래 되었어도 화려한 색조와 우아함을 여전히 간직하고 있지만

이쪽의 세상은 빛이 바래고, 허물어지며 쇠락해 가는 모습을 하고 있었다.

이것이 나의 우주피스에 대한 첫인상이었다.

 

다리를 지나면 쇄석도 양쪽으로 다세대 주택과 상가들이 이어지고

그 길 끝에 이르면 움츠렸던 어깨를 펼 수 있는 작은 광장 같은 것이 나타난다.

그리고 나팔 부는 천상이 언덕으로 오르는 경사면 시작점에 우뚝 서 있다.

이 광장이 아마도 실존하기도 하고 가상이기도 한 우주피스 공화국의 중심부일 것이다.

나팔, 천사-이런 것들이 주는 자유와 평화의 이미지로

우주피 공화국의 토템처럼 의연하게 서 있다.

 

걸을을 좀 더 옮기면 길 한쪽 벽에 우주피스 공화국의 헌법이 새겨진 금빛 도금으로 된 금속판이 자리하고 있다.

리투아니아어는 물론, 러시아어, 영어, 불어, 스페인어 등 세계 어러 나라 언어로 새겨진 헌 법 전문은

그 수가 마흔이 넘는데 반갑게도 한국어로 된 것도 있었다.

 

유태인들 살던 게토 같은 곳에 그들이 떠나자 가난한 예술가들이 찾아들며 

조금씩 생명력을 갖게된 우주피스 공화국은

매해 4월 1일(만우절)에만 가상에서 현실로 존재하게 된다.

다리 앞에 이국 심사대가 설치되며, 여권에 비자를 받아야 입국이 허용된다고 한다.

대통령도 있고, 외무부 장관이며 열두 명으로 이루어진 군대를 관장하는 국방부 장관도 있다.

 

그들이 우주피스 공화국을 만든 것은 아주 소박한 바람에서였을 것이다.

아무래도 북쪽에 위치한 리투아니아의 겨울날씨는 혹독하게 추울 것이고

가난한 사람들은 겨울을 따뜻하게 날 수 있는 집과 연료를 간절하게 원할 것이다.

인간으로 누려야 할 아주 소박하고 기본적인 내용으로 우주피스의 헌법은 구성되어 있다.

헌법 중의 몇 가지는 다음과 같다.

 

모든 사람은 강을 건널 권리가 있다.
모든 사람은 개를 키울 권리가 있다.
모든 사람은 고양이를 돌볼 권리가 있다.
모든 사람은 실수를 저지를 권리가 있다.
모든 사람은 독립적일 권리가 있다.
모든 사람은 게으를 권리가 있다.
모든 사람은 사랑할 권리가 있다.
모든 사람은 행복할 권리가 있다.

 

군더더기 하나없이 아주 기본적인 삶들의 바람으로 이루어진 헌법은

현실은 실제로 그렇지 못하다는반증이 된다.

팍팍하기만 한 삶이지만 그들의 헌법은 블랙 코미디처럼 눈물과 함께 아름다운 삶에의 동경을 품고 있다.

 

짧았던 우주피스 공화국 방문은

내 삶이 얼마나 물질적으로 정신적으로 풍요한지를 일깨워주었다.

돌아오는 길, 다리를 건너며 꿈과 소망이 있는 곳이 바로 천당이라는 생각을 했다.

 

*"우주피스" (Užupis)는 리투아니아어로 "강 너머" 또는 "강 건너편"을 의미합니다. 이 이름은 리투아니아의 수도 빌니우스에 위치한 지역의 이름에서 유래했으며, 이 지역이 빌넬레 강(Vilnelė River)을 건너 위치해 있기 때문에 붙여졌습니다. 우주피스는 예술가들과 창작자들이 모여 살던 보헤미안적인 분위기를 가진 곳으로, "우주피스 공화국"이라는 상징적인 마이크로네이션의 이름이 되었습니다.

 

The Republic of Užupis in Lithuania

While wandering aimlessly through Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania (a method we often choose when traveling), I stumbled upon a bridge. The bridge was so narrow that only one car could pass in one direction at a time. There was a sidewalk next to the road, but if people from both directions met in the middle of the bridge, one side had to step onto the road. However, this didn’t seem to be a big problem as traffic was not very frequent.

Under the bridge flowed a stream, which I later learned was the Vilnelė River. Being accustomed to the Han River in Seoul or the Hudson River in New York, I couldn’t understand how a stream that could be crossed with a long jump, like the protagonist in “My Liberation Notes,” could be called a river. The railings on both sides of the bridge were densely packed with locks of various sizes and shapes, many of which were rusted. As I crossed the bridge, I wondered if the people who placed those locks were still connected.

The bridge is a passage connecting two different worlds. The world that appeared after crossing the bridge was somehow different from the world on the other side. It felt like stepping from sunlight into shade while wearing sunglasses. The world on the other side of the bridge, though old, still retained its vibrant colors and elegance, while this side seemed faded, crumbling, and decaying. This was my first impression of Užupis.

After crossing the bridge, the cobblestone road continued with multi-family houses and shops on both sides, leading to a small square where one could stretch their shoulders. At the beginning of the slope leading up to the hill stood a statue of an angel blowing a trumpet. This square is probably the center of the Užupis Republic, which is both real and imaginary. The trumpet and angel, symbols of freedom and peace, stand tall like the totems of the Užupis Republic.

Walking a bit further, I found a golden metal plate on one side of the wall, inscribed with the constitution of the Užupis Republic. The constitution, written in Lithuanian, Russian, English, French, Spanish, and other languages, had over forty articles, including one in Korean.

The Užupis Republic, which began to gain life as poor artists moved into the area once inhabited by Jews, exists in reality only on April 1st (April Fool’s Day) each year. A customs checkpoint is set up in front of the bridge, and entry is allowed only with a visa stamped on the passport. There is a president, a foreign minister, and a defense minister who oversees a twelve-member army.

Their creation of the Užupis Republic likely stemmed from a very modest desire. Given that Lithuania, located in the north, has harshly cold winters, the poor would desperately want a warm house and fuel to survive the winter. The constitution of Užupis is composed of very modest and basic rights that humans should enjoy. Some of the articles of the constitution are as follows:

Everyone has the right to cross the river.
Everyone has the right to keep a dog.
Everyone has the right to care for a cat.
Everyone has the right to make mistakes.
Everyone has the right to be independent.
Everyone has the right to be lazy.
Everyone has the right to love.
Everyone has the right to be happy.
The constitution, composed of very basic desires for life without any frills, is a testament to the fact that reality is not actually like that. Although life is tough, their constitution, like black comedy, harbors a longing for a beautiful life with tears.

The short visit to the Užupis Republic reminded me of how materially and spiritually rich my life is. On the way back, crossing the bridge, I thought that a place with dreams and hopes is heaven.

*“Užupis” means “beyond the river” or “the other side of the river” in Lithuanian. This name originates from the area located across the Vilnelė River in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Užupis, with its bohemian atmosphere where artists and creators gather, became the symbolic name of the micro-nation “Užupis Republic.”
