리투아니아에서 라트비아 가는 길 - 카우나스(Kaunas)

리투아니아에서 이틀 밤을 자고

우리는 라트비아로 이동을 했다.

라트아비아로 가는 도중에 두 곳을 들렸는데

그중 한 곳이 카우나스였다.

카우나스는 리투아니아의 도시 중하나인데

방문 전이나 후나 아는 바가 별로 없다는 점에서 매일반이다.

 

아마도 우리의 여행 스타일이

여행하는 곳의 역사나 문화를 이해하거나 공부하려는 것이 아니고

그저 발길 닿는 대로 걸어 다니는 것에 무게 중심을 두기 때문인데

여행을 다녀와서도 여행지 이름을 기억하지 못하는 실례를 자주 범한다.

그래도 외우려고 노력했던 도시가 카우나스였는데

암소(cow)가 사우나(sauna)를 한다는 연상으로 도시 이름을 외웠는데

용케도 아직도 잊지 않고 기억을 한다.

 

여행 도중 만났던 사람, 그곳의 향기나 색깔 같은 것으로

내 여행의 기억은 채워진다.

특별히 카우나스에서는 작은 성당 앞,

돌 길 사이사이에 떨어져 있던

장미 꽃 이파리가 잊히지 않는다.

아마도 성당에서 결혼식 같은 행사가 있었던 것으로 추측되었다.

 

우리의 목적지는 카우나스의 주교좌성당이었다.

 

카우나스에는 강이 흐르고 있는데,

강을 건너 카우나스에 들어서서 성당 건물이 있는 골목에 접어들자

학생들이 건물을 스케치하는 모습이 눈에 들어왔다.

 

지금도 카우나스라는 도시를 생각하면

자연스레 골목길에서 그림을 그리던 학생들의 모습이 먼저 떠오른다.

 

카우나스의 주교좌성당은 광장을 끼고 자리하고 있는데

광장 주변에는 그것 말고도 서너 개의 아름다운 성당이 서로 얼굴을 맞대고 있다.

내가 이곳 주민이라면 일요일에 어느 성당을 가야 하나 하고 고민을 할 것 같다.

 

우리가 도착한 시간이 오전 아홉 시쯤 되었는데

광장 주변의 카페나 식당은 문을 연 곳이 거의 없었다.

 

주교좌성당을 한 바퀴 둘러보고 

마침 문이 열려 있던 카페에서 커피 한 잔을 마셨다.

아, 카우나스를 떠 올리면 그때 마셨던 커피가 담겨 있던 잔의 색이 기억난다.

 

아이들이 그림을 그리고 있는 모습이 궁금해서

서둘러 아이들이 그림을 그리고 있던 곳으로 바쁘게 걸음을 옮겼다.

한 떼의 동남아 관광객들이 사진을 찍느라 그림 그리는 아이들의 시야를 가렸다.

성당 안에서도 그랬다.

 

아이들은 그럼에도 열심히 그림을 그렸다.

카우나스의 그림을 그리던 이이들의 모습이

그림의 대상이 되었던 건물보다도 눈에 선하다.

카우나스의 한 자락에 머물렀던 짧은 시간,

아이들의 눈 속에 담긴 그림의 대상이 어떤 형태로

도화지에 남았을까?

The Road from Lithuania to Latvia - Kaunas

 

After spending two nights in Lithuania,

we headed to Latvia.

During our journey to Latvia, we made two stops,

and one of them was Kaunas.

Kaunas is one of Lithuania’s cities,

but I knew very little about it before or after the visit.

Perhaps our travel style focuses more on wandering wherever our feet take us,

rather than studying the history or culture of the places we visit.

Even so, I made an effort to remember the name of Kaunas,

associating it with the idea that “cows” (암소) take saunas (사우나).

Surprisingly, I still remember it.

During our brief stay in Kaunas, I noticed something special:

small rose leaves scattered along the cobblestone streets,

especially near a little church.

I suspect there might have been a wedding or similar event at the cathedral.

Our destination was the Kaunas Cathedral Basilica.

Kaunas has a river flowing through it,

and as we crossed the river and entered the alley with the cathedral,

I saw students sketching the building.

Even now, when I think of Kaunas,

the image of students sketching in the narrow streets comes to mind first.

The Kaunas Cathedral Basilica stands on a square,

surrounded by several other beautiful churches.

If I were a local, I’d probably ponder which church to visit on Sundays.

When we arrived around 9 AM,

most cafes and restaurants around the square were still closed.

We circled the cathedral and found an open cafe,

where I enjoyed a cup of coffee. Ah, the color of that coffee cup remains vivid in my memory.

Curious about the children sketching, I hurried over to where they were working.

A group of Southeast Asian tourists blocked the view, busy taking photos,

but the children persisted in their drawings.

The image of those Kaunas-bound students sketching

is more memorable than the building itself.

During our brief time in Kaunas,

I wonder how the subjects of their sketches remain preserved on paper,

captured in the eyes of those children.
