내미는 손, 잡아주는 손

 

리투아니아의 수도인 빌니우스에 머물면서

차로 한 시간쯤 걸리는 곳에 는 곳을 다녀왔다.

우리가 발트해 3국 여행을 간다고 하니

우리 옆집 사는 Ella가 그곳을 추천해서 이루어진 짧은 여행이었다.

 

트라카이는 빌니우스에서 한 시간가량 걸리는 곳에 자리하고 있었는데

목적지에 가까이 가자 한적하던 도로가 차량들로 복작거리기 시작했다.

호수가 아기자기하게 굽이굽이 이어지고

호수 가운데 다리로 건너가 닿는 곳에 육지가 있는데

거기에 아름다운 성이 있는 그림 같은 곳이었다.

 

관광객들은 주로 성을 방문하고

배를 타고 호수를 한 바퀴 도는 것으로 이곳 여행 일정을 마무리하는 것 같았다.

아마도 리투아니아 사람들에게는 여름 물놀이 장소로 각광을 받는 것으로 짐작되었다.

 

주차를 하고 성으로 가는 다리를 건너

성을 한 바퀴 구름처럼 천천한 걸음걸이로 성을 한 바퀴 돌았다.

사방으로 호수에는 크고 작은 배들이 떠다니고 있었다.

 

그런데 성 주위를 걷는데

내 눈을 끄는 광경이 있었다.

세네 살가량의 아들이 아빠의 손을 잡아 끄는 장면이었다.

모르긴 몰라도 아이는 물속에서 고기 같은 걸 발견한 모양이었다.

"아빠, 이리 와 이것 좀 봐, "

 

아이가 내미는 손을 아빠가 잡았다.

 

손 잡음 

 

사랑은 보이지 않는다.

그런데 아빠와 아들 사이의 손잡음을 통해서

둘 사이의 보이지 않는 사랑과 신뢰가

구체적으로 형상화되는 것이다.

 

트라카이 여행을 회상할 때

아들이 내미는 손을 아빠가 잡아주는,

평범하다면 평범하다고도 할 수 있는 광경이

푸른 하늘 아래 붉은 성의 아름다움보다도 더 두드러지게 떠오른다.

 

누군가 내미는 손을 잡아줄 수 있는 사람이 있음은 얼마나 큰 축복인가.

 

A Hand Reaching Out, A Hand Holding On

While staying in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, I took a trip to a place called Trakai, which is about an hour away by car. Our short trip was recommended by Ella, our next-door neighbor, when we mentioned we were traveling to the Baltic States.

Trakai is situated about an hour from Vilnius, and as we got closer to our destination, the once quiet road started bustling with vehicles. The picturesque landscape featured winding lakes and a bridge leading to an island with a beautiful castle.

Most tourists visit the castle and take a boat ride around the lake to complete their trip. It seemed that this place was a popular summer getaway spot for Lithuanians.

After parking, we crossed the bridge to the castle and took a leisurely walk around it. Boats of various sizes floated on the lake all around us.

While walking around the castle, a sight caught my eye. It was a scene of a three or four-year-old boy pulling his father’s hand. The boy seemed to have spotted something in the water, perhaps a fish. "Dad, come here, look at this," he said.

The father took the boy’s outstretched hand.

Hand in Hand

Love is invisible. But through the act of holding hands between father and son, the invisible love and trust between them became tangible.

When I recall our trip to Trakai, the image of the father holding his son's outstretched hand stands out more vividly than the beauty of the red castle under the blue sky, though it could be considered an ordinary sight.

How blessed it is to have someone who can hold your outstretched hand.
