길들여진다는 것

내가 사랑하고 많은 영감을 받은 책 '어린 왕자'에는 '길들여지는 것'에 대한 내용이 나온다.

'길들여지는 것'은 인간관계에서 참 중요하고도 깊은 의미를 가지고 있는 것 같다.

 

어린 왕자에서 "길들여진다다"는 것은 단순히 관계를 맺는 것을 넘어, 서로에게 특별한 존재가 되는 과정을 의미한다.

이 개념은 어린 왕자와 여우의 대화에서 가장 잘 드러나는데. 여우는 어린 왕자에게 이렇게 말한다.

 

"네가 나를 길들이면 우리는 서로에게 유일한 존재가 되는 거야. 너는 나에게 이 세상에서 단 하나뿐인 존재가 되고, 나 역시 너에게 유일한 존재가 되는 거지."

 

어린 왕자는 금빛 머리카락을 가지고 있는데,. 여우는 처음에는 밀밭을 보아도 아무런 감정을 느끼지 못한다.

그런데 어린 왕자에게 길들여지면서 밀밭을 볼 때마다 어린 왕자의 금빛 머리카락을 떠올리게 된다.

여우는 이렇게 말한다.

 

"밀은 금빛이지. 그러니 네가 나를 길들이면, 밀밭을 볼 때마다 네가 생각날 거야.

그러면 난 밀밭 사이로 불어오는 바람 소리를 사랑하게 될 거야."

 

여우와 어린 왕자가 서로 길들여진 관계로 발전하면

노란 밀밭은 여우에게 어린 왕자의 머리색깔이 연상될 정도로 특별한 감정을 유발하게 된다.

 

일주일에 한 번 우리 손자 준오는 우리와 함께 하루를 보낸다.

준오가 우리와 시간을 보내는 동안 준오 아빠는 우리 콘도의 라운지에서 일을 한다.

 

우리 집에는 가습기가 있는데 그 가습기를 아내가 구입한 이래 

나의 눈에는 그저 있어도 그만, 없어도 이상할 것 하나 없는 존재로 여겨졌다.

그런데 준오가 우리 집에 와서 지내는 동안

가습기에서 나오는 작은 물방울 분자 같은 것에 흥미를 갖는 것을 알 수 있었다.

그 안개 같은 작은 물방울을 잡으려 무던히도 애쓰는 준오의 모습을 보며

내 입에서 미소가 번져 나왔다.

안개를 잡으려는 준오의 모습이 그렇게 귀여울 수가 없었다.

 

그 광경을 보고 난 뒤의 가습기와 거기서 나오는 물방울은

더 이상 아무런 의미가 없는 정물화의 틀을 벗어났다.

그때부터 가습기와 작은 물방울을 볼 때면

준오가 그것을 쥐려고 했던 작은 손과 그의 몸짓을 연상하게 되었고

나도 모르게 입가에 미소가 번지는 것을 알게 되었다.

 

길들여진다는 것은 특별한 관계가 되는 것이다.

별로 의미가 없는 한 장면이, 한 물건이 의미를 띠고

나에게 말을 거는 사이로 발전하게 된다는 것이다.

길들여진 관계가 있다는 것으로 해서 삶은 얼마나 아름답고 풍요로워지는지 모르겠다.

 

다음에 우리를 찾아올 준오를 기억하며

나는 오늘도 가습기의 물을 채운다.

(그전에는 아주 게을리, 그리고 거의 하지 않던 일이다.)

물을 채우는 건 물론이고

물이 담기는 용기를 아주 정성 들여 씻고 또 씻는다.

 

가습게에서 나오는 작은 물방울 속에서

준오의 깔깔대는 웃음소리가 들리는 것 같다.

 

 

 

Being Tamed

One of the books that I love and that has inspired me deeply is The Little Prince. It contains a profound reflection on what it means to be "tamed."

The idea of being tamed carries a significant and deep meaning in human relationships.

In The Little Prince, being tamed means more than simply forming a relationship — it signifies the process of becoming special to one another.

This concept is best illustrated in the conversation between the Little Prince and the Fox. The Fox tells the Little Prince:

"If you tame me, we will become unique to each other. You will become the only one in the world to me, and I will become the only one in the world to you."

The Little Prince has golden hair, and at first, the Fox feels nothing when he sees the wheat fields.

But as the Little Prince tames him, the Fox begins to associate the golden color of the wheat fields with the Little Prince’s hair. The Fox says:

"Wheat is golden. So, once you tame me, the sight of the wheat fields will remind me of you. And I will come to love the sound of the wind passing through the wheat."

As the relationship between the Fox and the Little Prince deepens through the process of being tamed, the golden wheat fields evoke special feelings for the Fox, reminding him of the Little Prince’s golden hair.

Every week, our grandson Joono spends a day with us.

While Joono spends time with us, his father works in the lounge of our condo.

We have a humidifier at home that, since my wife bought it, had always seemed like an insignificant object to me — something that could be there or not, and it wouldn’t matter much.

But I noticed that Joono was fascinated by the tiny mist droplets coming from the humidifier when he was with us.

Watching Joono try so hard to catch the little droplets of mist with his hands made me smile.

He looked so adorable as he tried to grasp the mist.

After seeing that scene, the humidifier and its mist were no longer just meaningless objects to me.

From then on, whenever I see the mist from the humidifier, I am reminded of Joono’s small hands reaching out to catch it and his playful gestures. Without realizing it, I find myself smiling.

Being tamed means forming a special bond.

A seemingly meaningless object or moment becomes meaningful and starts to speak to you.

Having such a tamed relationship makes life so much more beautiful and rich.

Thinking of Joono visiting us again, today I fill the humidifier with water — something I used to neglect or barely remember to do.

Not only do I fill it with water, but I carefully and thoroughly wash the container as well.

In the tiny mist droplets coming from the humidifier, I seem to hear Joono’s bright, cheerful laughter.
