잔지바르의 Stone Town 1

 

셋째 딸 부부와 함께 Tanzania로 여행을 떠난 것이 2 월 초였다.

JFK를 출발해서 카타르의 도하까지 가서 비행기를 갈아타고

Tanzania의 다르에스살람(Dar es Salaam)을 거쳐 잔지바르에 도착을 했다.

다르에스살람에 도착해 보니 우리의 짐은 도착하지 않았고 행방이 묘연했다.

JFK에서 카타르 항공사 직원의 반강제적인 요청으로 가방을 수하물로 부쳤는데

우리 가방 넷이 모두 사라진 것이었다.

나는 백팩에 속옷을 넣어 두어서 기본적으로 별 문제가 없었는데

아내와 딸 부부는 더운 날씨에 당장 갈아입을 옷이 없어서 고생을 해야 했다.

 

잔지바르의 휴양지에 위치한 호텔에서 이틀 밤을 보내고

우리는 잔지바르의 중심부에 있는 Stone Town을 찾기로 했다.

Stone Town은 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 등재된 곳이라고 한다.

항구가 있으니 옛날부터 교역이 활발하게 이루어졌고

따라서 그곳에 있는 Spice Market이 유명하다고 했다.

 

우리는 Stone Town에 가는 길에 쇼핑몰에 들렸다.

짐가방이 사라져서 당장 아프리카의 날씨를 견딜 수 있는 짧은 옷이 필요했기 때문이었다.

나는 짧은 바지를 하나 샀고 사위 Dan은 반바지와 반팔 셔츠 하나를 샀다.

그러나 아내와 딸은 당장 갈아입을 수 있는 짧은 옷을 살 수가 없었다.

몇 군데를 돌아다녀 보아도 여자들이 입을 수 있는 짧은 옷을 파는 곳은 없었다.

여성 옷가게는 온통 몸 전체를 가릴 수 있는 긴 드레스를 파는 곳 밖에는 없었다.

 

내가 알기로 잔지바르의 주민 대부분이 이슬람 교도인데

그런 까닭으로 여성들은 노출이 많은 옷을 입을 수 없으니

더운 날씨에 당장 필요한 옷을 구입할 수가 없었다.

 

우리는 Stone Town으로 향했다.

택시에서 내려 그 유명하다는 Spice Market으로 발걸음을 옮겼다

몇 걸음 옮기지 않아서 등에는 땀이 흐르기 시작했다.

시장 안은 우리;나라의 재래시장처럼 가게가 다닥다닥 붙어 있었다.

수만 가지 종류의 스파이스를 파는 가게들이 눈에 띄었으나

나는 별 관심이 없었다.

 

더운 날씨에 정육을 파는 곳에서는 단백질이 막 변질되어 가는 듯한

냄새가 났다. 냉장 시설이 제대로 되어 있지 않아서였다.

설사 훌륭한 냉장 시설이 있어도

잦은 정전으로 제대로 그 기능을 발휘할 수 없는 게 잔지바르의 현주소였다.

 

우리는 빨리 시장 건물을 빠져나와

미로처럼 이어져 있는 시장 골목으로 들어섰다.

Stone Town 1, Zanzibar

It was early February when I traveled to Tanzania with my third daughter and her husband. We departed from JFK, transferred planes in Doha, Qatar, and arrived in Zanzibar via Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Upon reaching Dar es Salaam, we found out that our luggage hadn't arrived and its whereabouts were unknown. At JFK, a Qatar Airways staff member had insisted we check our bags, and now all four of our bags were missing. I had packed underwear in my backpack, so I wasn't in much trouble, but my wife and daughter were struggling in the hot weather without a change of clothes.

After spending two nights at a hotel in a Zanzibar resort area, we decided to visit Stone Town, the heart of Zanzibar. Stone Town is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town has a port, which made it a bustling hub for trade in the past, and its Spice Market is quite famous.

On our way to Stone Town, we stopped at a shopping mall. Since our luggage was missing, we urgently needed light clothing suitable for the African weather. I bought a pair of shorts, and my son-in-law Dan bought a pair of shorts and a short-sleeved shirt. However, my wife and daughter couldn't find any short clothes to buy. We checked several places, but there were no short clothes for women available. Women's clothing stores only sold long dresses that covered the entire body.

As far as I know, most residents of Zanzibar are Muslims, and because of this, women cannot wear revealing clothing. This made it impossible for my wife and daughter to buy the necessary clothes for the hot weather.

We headed towards Stone Town. After getting out of the taxi, we walked towards the famous Spice Market. Within a few steps, I started sweating. The market was packed with shops, similar to traditional markets in our country. Although numerous shops were selling all kinds of spices, I wasn't particularly interested.

In the hot weather, the butcher shops emitted a smell that suggested the proteins were starting to spoil. This was because the refrigeration facilities weren't adequate. Even if there were excellent refrigeration facilities, frequent power outages prevented them from functioning properly, which is the reality in Zanzibar.

We quickly exited the market building and entered the maze-like market alleys.
