When Alexander Scriabin died unexpectedly in 1915, he left behind an incomplete score on his piano.
This music was for a week-long synesthetic experience called "Mysterium" in the Himalayas that would activate all the senses.
I'm producing MYSTERIUM NOVUM, the modern realization of this project 100 years after Scriabin's death, combining music, visual art, dance, perfume, colors, lights, fashion, and technology. We have amazing artists lined up for this, but I'll introduce the composers first!
Composer/conductor/installation artist Paul Haas is the founder and director of Sympho, putting on innovative, multisensory concerts at great spaces such as the Park Ave Armory, Grace Cathedral, and the Oliver Ranch Foundation's Tower designed by Ann Hamilton. According to The NY Times, he “is surely on the brink of a noteworthy career.” Time Out New York calls him a “visionary.”
Composer and steel pannist Andy Akiho is the recent winner of the Rome Prize and Fromm Award. His music has been commissioned and performed by eighth blackbird, Sybarite5, NYPhil's CONTACT series, National Smphony Orchestra, American Composers Orchestra, L.A. Phil, and Benjamin Millipied's L.A. Dance Project. He strongly associates colors with some pitches/chords--have you heard his "Synesthesia Suite?"
