*아테네의 파르테논 신전

내가 그리스를 가 보고 싶다는 생각을 가진 것은 

대학 1학년 교양학부 시절, 철학을 배울 때였다.

소크라테스를 비롯해 플라톤 등등 걸출한 철학자들을 배출한 그리스라는 나라가 궁금했는데

그 나라의 하늘, 바다의 색깔이 궁금했기 때문이었다.

 

그러나 그 꿈은 그야말로 '희미한 옛사랑의 그림자'일뿐

그런 신선하고 향기 나던 나의 마음은 습기 차고  퇴색한 고서처럼 되어버렸다.

아테네의 푸른 하늘을 올려다 보기보다는

내리쬐는 햇살에 눈을 찡그려야 했다.

 

파르테논 신전은 내 생각보다 훨씬 크고 웅장했다.

공사 중인(아마 공사는 영원히 계속될 것이다) 신전의 모습은

임플란트와 보철을 한 것 같은 형상을 하고 있었다.

부서지고 무너진 대로 두면 상상력을 통해서 빈 곳을 채워볼 텐데-------

웅장하지만 좀 우스꽝스러운 모습을 하고 있다는 게 내 솔직한 생각이다.

 

그리스의 싱싱하게 푸른 하늘과 바다를 보고 싶었던 나의 꿈도 시들해졌으니

그 긴 시간을 견디고 버텨온 유물에 대해 내가 뭐라고 말할 자격이 있을까>

 

파르테논 신전 구경을 하기 위해 오르던 계단이며,

깔려 있는 바위가 모두 대리석이라는 게 신기하고 또 예뻤다는 기억.

특별히 사람들의 발길에 닳은 돌의 그 자연스러운 빛깔이 주는 소박한 아름다움.

My desire to visit Greece began during my freshman year in college, while I was studying philosophy. Learning about remarkable philosophers like Socrates and Plato sparked my curiosity about Greece as a country. I wanted to see the colors of its skies and seas.

However, that dream has faded into nothing more than a “faint shadow of a past love.” The freshness and fragrance of my longing have become like a damp, faded old book. Instead of gazing up at the blue sky of Athens, I found myself squinting against the bright sunlight.

The Parthenon was much larger and more magnificent than I had imagined. The temple, under constant renovation (a process that may continue indefinitely), looked as if it was fitted with implants and prosthetics. I thought that leaving the broken and crumbled parts as they were would allow us to fill in the gaps with our imagination—but I found its grandeur mixed with a bit of absurdity.

If my own dream of seeing Greece’s vibrant skies and seas has grown weary, who am I to speak about these relics that have endured and withstood such a long passage of time?

I remember the stairs I climbed to see the Parthenon, and how fascinating and beautiful it was that all the stones laid there were marble. There was a humble beauty in the natural colors of the stones, worn smooth from countless footsteps over the years.

 

 

*아테네의 파르테논 신전(Parthenon)은 고대 그리스 아테네의 아크로폴리스에 위치한 대리석 신전입니다. 기원전 447년부터 기원전 432년까지 아테나 여신을 기리기 위해 건축된 이 신전은 그리스 고전 건축의 대표적인 예시로 꼽히며, 특히 도리아식 건축 양식을 사용한 걸작으로 평가받습니다.

파르테논 신전은 아테나 파르테노스(Athena Parthenos)라는 아테나 여신의 또 다른 이름에서 유래했으며, 그리스어로 "처녀의 집"을 뜻합니다. 신전 내부에는 피디아스가 조각한 거대한 아테나 여신상이 있었으며, 이는 당시 그리스에서 신앙의 중심이었습니다. 신전의 각 기둥과 비례, 섬세한 조각은 예술적 가치가 매우 높아 그리스와 세계의 문화유산으로 인정받고 있습니다.

또한 파르테논 신전은 여러 시대를 거치며 다양한 역할을 했습니다. 로마 제국 시대에는 기독교 교회로, 오스만 제국 시대에는 모스크로 사용되기도 했습니다. 17세기 말에는 베네치아-오스만 전쟁 중 폭발로 큰 피해를 입었지만, 현재까지도 상당 부분이 남아 관광객에게 많은 사랑을 받고 있습니다.
