맨발로 바닷가 걷기

거의 열흘 동안 발트해 3국 여행을 마치고 어제 집에 돌아왔다.

여행을 하면서도 늘 집이 그리웠다.

 

바다가, 

파도 소리가 그리웠다.

 

그곳에도 해가 뜨고 해가 지지 않는 것은 아니지만

Rockaway의 일출과 일몰은

내가 집에 있어도 늘 내 그리움의 대상이다.

 

여행으로 피곤한 몸을 어제 일찍 침대에 뉘었다.

새벽에 그리움으로 눈을 떴다.

숙취 같은 가벼운 두통이 느껴졌다.

 

베란로 나가는 문을 열었다.

파도소리가 밀려들어왔다.

잠 없는 갈매기 한 마리가 하늘을 날고 있었다.

 

날이 밝은 기색이 보이자

바닷가로 나갔다.

다행히 117 스트릿에서 바닷가로 나가는 길이 열려 있었다.

해변에는 텐트를 치고 밤을 새운 사람들도 있었는데

조용히 아침을 기다리고 있었다.

 

바닷물에 발을 적시며 걸었다.

밀려오는 파도에 평화가 묻어왔다.

비로소 내가 집에 왔다는 안도감에 내 몸과 마음이 젖었다.

비로소 두통이 사라졌다.

 

프란치스코 성인의 표현을 흉내 내자면

어머니 바다는 치유의 힘을 갖도 있는 것 같다.

 

그리워할 대상이 있다는 건 축복이다.

오늘 아침 바닷가를 걸으며

축복 속에 푹 잠길 수 있었다.

 

떠남은 돌아오기 위함이란 걸

파도소리가 내게 귀띔해 주었다.

 

 

Barefoot Walk by the Seashore

After nearly ten days of traveling through the Baltic Sea region, covering three countries, I returned home yesterday. Even during my travels, I often longed for home.

The sea and the sound of waves were especially missed. While the Baltic region also experiences sunrises and sunsets, the ones in Rockaway remain a constant source of longing for me.

Last night, I went to bed early, exhausted from the journey. But I woke up in the early hours, filled with nostalgia. A slight headache, akin to a mild hangover, lingered.

I opened the balcony door, and the sound of waves rushed in. A lone seagull soared across the sky. As daylight broke, I stepped onto the beach. Thankfully, the path to the shore was open at 117th Street. Some people who had camped on the beach overnight were quietly awaiting the morning.

I dipped my feet into the seawater and walked. The sound of the waves brought a sense of peace. Finally, I felt the comfort of being home. The headache dissipated.

In the words of Saint Francis, perhaps the sea, like a mother, holds healing power.

Having something to miss is truly a blessing. This morning, as I walked along the shore, I found solace within that blessing.
