Morning Bike Ride

내가 살고 있는 Rockaway의 자랑거리를 꼽을 때

앞부분에 놓을 수 있는 것이 Boardalk라고 할 수 있다.

Beach 9 스트릿부터 126 스트릿에 이르는 Boardwalk는 

아무런 장애도 받지 않고 걷거나 뛸 수도 있고

자전거를 타기에도 더할 나위 없이 훌륭한 환경을 제공한다.

아름다운 바다 풍경을 바라보면서

Bowardwalk 위를 달릴 때의 기분은 얼마나 상쾌한지 모른다.

이곳으로 이사 온 것이 행운이라는 생각을 하게 되는 것도 이럴 때이다.

 

그런데 어떤 때는 사진을 찍기 위해서 급히 어디론가 가야 하는데

차를 타고 가면 주차 장소 때문에,

걸어가면 너무 오래 걸리기 때문에 

자전거가 필요하다는 생각을 하고 있었다.

 

그런데 어제 자전거를 한 대 소유하게 되었다.

지난번 프로스펙트 공원에서 열린 달리기 대회를 마치고

둘째 사위 Brian에게 자전거 한 대가 있으면 좋겠다는 부탁을 했다.

그래서 Brian이 여기저기 알아보고 드디어 중고 자전거 한 대를 마련해서 

어제 내 손에 전달하게 되었다.

Vannondale이라는 미국산 브랜드의 자전거인데

알루미늄 재질로 만들어져서 참 가볍다.

지난주엔 가에는 하루에 160 마일을 자전거로 달릴 정도로

자전거에 진심인 Brian은

먼지 쌓인 자전거를 말끔히 닦고 기름치고 조이고,

내가 탈 수 있도록 높이와 쉬프트(기어) 변속 손잡이와 브레이크 등을 조절해 주었다.

 

드디어 오늘 아침 자전거를 타게 되었다.

 

126 스트릿에서 시작해서

아주 천천히 한눈을 팔아가며 9 스트릿까지 자전거를 탔는데

20 분 가량 걸린 것 같다.

바다의 풍경과 아침 바람이 상쾌했다.

 

Boardwalk를 즐기고 사랑할 수 있는

또 하나의 길이 생긴 것 같아 행복한 오늘 아침.

 

Morning Bike Ride

When I think of the highlights in Rockaway, where I live, one prominent feature stands out: the Boardwalk. Stretching from Beach 9th Street to 126th Street, the Boardwalk offers an ideal environment for walking, running, and cycling. The unobstructed path provides stunning views of the ocean, and there’s nothing quite like the refreshing feeling of riding along the Boardwalk.

Recently, I found myself needing a bike for quick trips to capture photos. Driving often involves parking challenges, and walking takes too long. Fortunately, yesterday, I finally acquired a bicycle. After participating in a recent Prospect Park running race, I asked my son-in-law, Brian, if he could find me a bike. Brian, a dedicated cyclist who covers up to 160 miles a day, meticulously prepared a secondhand Vannondale bike for me. It’s made of lightweight aluminum and perfectly adjusted for my height, gear shifts, and brakes.

This morning, I hopped on the bike. Starting at 126th Street, I leisurely pedaled, taking in the sights along the way. It took about 20 minutes to reach 9th Street. The ocean views and the morning breeze were invigorating.

Having another way to enjoy and appreciate the Boardwalk feels like a stroke of luck. Today, I’m grateful for this new addition to my mornings—a bike ride that brings happiness and a fresh perspective.
