A Stroll Through Seoul – The Black-and-White TV (2018)
While walking the Seoul Dulle-gil trail with my high school friends,
we stepped into a café and noticed an old black-and-white TV on display.
That TV was like a time machine, pulling me straight back into childhood.
Back then, hardly anyone in our neighborhood owned a television.
But comic book stores would keep a TV set as a marketing trick—
and for us kids, it was sacred ground.
If you read ten comic books, you earned a precious chance to watch TV.
Whenever Kim Il had a wrestling match,
the comic store would be packed wall to wall with kids.
(Everyone called him “Kim Il,”
though to this day I still don’t know if it was “Kim Il” or “Kim Twelve.”)
The sliding glass doors of the comic store
were pasted over with sheets of paper.
From outside, we’d try to sneak a glimpse of the glowing screen
by quietly sliding the door open just a crack.
But the store owner had his eyes not on the TV,
but firmly fixed on the door.
He was a strict, no-nonsense businessman.
He wouldn’t give us even an inch of opening—
with a loud scolding,
and an even louder slam,
the door would be shut with finality.
On wrestling nights, the store owner would let in only the kids with coupons.
While they cheered inside,
he sold tteokbokki and fish cakes—
probably making a decent little profit.
We stood outside, listening to our friends shout and cheer,
imagining Kim Il’s headbutt knocking his opponent dizzy.
Even from the other side of the glass,
we too were swept up in the thrill.
The sliding glass door divided two worlds:
inside and outside.
And we, the little ones on the outside,
had to picture the whole match
from nothing but the sounds coming through the door.
That black-and-white TV,
once the stuff of childhood dreams,
now sits unnoticed.
There may still be dazzling moments,
but the days that were dazzling—those are gone.
What’s left behind in the shadow of time?
Time carries away the glory,
leaving only things…
or memories.
