색을 포기한 호색한 

내가 사진을 찍을 때 무의식적으로 관심을 기울이는 건 색깔이다.

색깔이 주는 감흥은 매우 직설적이며  찰나적이다.

그러니 아침저녁으로 펼쳐지는 하늘의 빛깔은 

카레라를 든 내 손가락이 셔터를 자동 화기를 발사하는 것처럼 분주하게 만든다.

그런데 보통 그 색이 주는 황홀감은 그때뿐,

두고 보면 그 농도가 옅어진다.

 

그래서 아주 자주 "내 사진에서 색을 빼고 나면 무엇이 남을까?" 하는 회의에 빠지곤 한다.

그래서 빛의 농담만으로 사진을 찍으려고 무던히도 마음을 다잡지만

예수를 세 번이나 배반한 베드로처럼 나의 결심은 모래성처럼 쉽게 무너진다.

색이 내게 던지는 추파에

나의 마음은 

콘크리트 바닥에 떨어진 얇은 유리그릇처럼 쉽사리 깨져 버리고 만다. 

 

오늘 아침은 검은 구름이 하늘을 덮고 있었다.

해가 뜨는 곳 부근의 하늘에  붉은빛이 감돌았다.

 

잠시 망설였다.

그리고 마음을 먹었다, 색을 포기하기로.

 

흑백으로 사진을 찍고 나서 후회를 했다.

색을 포기하니

빛과 그림자, 밝음과 어두움만이 있는 사진 속에  무엇이 남아 있을까---

 

그러나 사진은 내게 아무 말도 하지 않았다.

When I take photographs, it's color that unconsciously captures my attention.

The thrill that color brings is immediate, almost blunt—ephemeral in its beauty.

That’s why the hues painted across the sky each morning and evening
turn the fingers holding my camera into a kind of rapid-fire machine gun,
the shutter clicking as if possessed.

But the euphoria color offers is fleeting.
With time, its richness fades, the saturation dissolving like a memory.

And so I often find myself in quiet doubt,
asking, “What remains in my photograph if I strip away the color?”

Time and again, I resolve to photograph using only the subtle tones of light—
highlights and shadows alone.
Yet like Peter, who denied Jesus three times,
my resolution crumbles like a castle of sand.

At color’s seductive glance,
my will shatters—
as fragile as a thin glass bowl dropped on concrete.

This morning, the sky was veiled in dark clouds.
A faint red glow lingered where the sun was meant to rise.

I hesitated.
And then I made a decision:
to forsake color.

I took the photos in black and white—
and regretted it.

With color gone,
what is left in a photograph made only of light and shadow,
of brightness and darkness?

But the photograph
offered no reply.
