Beautiful Morning, Beautiful People

 

어제부터 아내는 잔뜩 기대감에 부풀어 있었다.

원래 아내의 성향이 신기하고 새로운 경험하기를 좋아하는데

동네 친구 Linda의 부추김을 받아 그 성향이 나날이 심화되고 있는 중이다.

아내를 그토록 들뜨게 한 내용인즉슨 오늘 아침 5 시 반 경에

그믐달 위에 토성과 금성이 위치해서

마치 스마일 페이스 닮은 형상을 볼 수 있는 기회가 찾아온다는 것이었다.

그러면서 반드시 그 광경을 목도하고야 말겠다는 전의를 어제 오후부터 불태웠다.

 

아침 다섯 시.

아내의 명령이 떨어졌다.

"옥상에 올라가 달이 떴는지 확인하고 오세요."

득달같이 옥상으로 올라가 달의 행방을 찾아보니

바다 위 어둔 하늘에 그믐달이 눈썹처럼 걸려 있었다.

그리고 좀 많이 떨어진 위쪽에 밝게 빛나는 별이 눈에 띄었다.

아무리 달 부근에 별 두 개가 떠서 스마일 페이스가 있는지

눈을 비비고 보아도 연상할 수 있는 그 어느 것도 보이지 않았다.

확인하고 확인을 해도 내 눈에 보이는 건 그믐 달 뿐이었다.

 

아내에게 실망스러운 보고를 하고 나니

아내는 내 말을 믿지 못하겠는지 몸소 바다로 행차를 하실 채비를 했다.

아내는 사진을 찍어서 확대를 한 뒤 살피고 또 살펴보았으나

문제의 스마일 페이스는 볼 수 없었다.

 

아내는 실망스러운 마음을 내려놓고 달리기를 시작했다.

 

나도 천천히 바닷가 산책을 했다.

그런데 아이 둘을 데리고 일출을 맞기 위해 바닷가로 나온 부부를 만났다.

아름다운 일출을 기다리며 그 가족은 연신 행복한 웃음을 터뜨렸다.

 

그 가족의 얼굴이 바로 스마일 페이스였다.

하늘에서 보지 못했던 스마일 페이스를 바닷가의 그 가족에서 만날 수 있었다.

가족들의 웃음소리에 나도 덩달아 행복한 미소를 지을 수 있었다.

하늘의 스마일 페이스보다도

사람들의 스마일 페이스는 얼마나 더 아름다운지----

 

그때 아침 아침해가 둥실 떠 오르기 시작했다.

 

 

Beautiful Morning, Beautiful People

Since yesterday, my wife had been brimming with anticipation.
She has always had a fondness for the novel and the curious—
and under the gentle persuasion of our neighborhood friend Linda,
that fondness has only deepened day by day.

The reason for her excitement was this:
around 5:30 this morning,
Saturn and Venus would align just above a crescent moon,
forming a shape in the sky that resembled a smiling face.

From yesterday afternoon,
she was determined—burning with resolve—
to witness this celestial smile with her own eyes.

At five in the morning,
my wife issued her command:
"Go up to the rooftop and see if the moon is visible."

I hurried up the stairs and searched the sky.
There, hanging like an eyebrow over the sea’s dark canvas,
was the crescent moon.

Far above it, a single bright star gleamed.
But no matter how hard I rubbed my eyes and squinted,
no smile revealed itself in the sky—
just the lone crescent, quiet and distant.

When I returned to report this disappointing news,
she looked at me with suspicion
and began preparing herself to go see the ocean for herself.

She took photos and zoomed in,
scanning them again and again—
but still, no trace of the smile she had hoped to find.

Letting go of her disappointment,
she began her morning run.

I followed the shore on a slow walk.
There, I came across a couple with two young children,
who had come to greet the sunrise together.

As they waited for the sun to rise,
laughter echoed from the family—
light, joyful, free.

And there it was.
The smile I could not find in the sky
had appeared in their faces.
The smile that the heavens withheld
was shining brightly here,
in the warmth of this family.

Their joy became mine.
And in that moment, I realized—
how much more beautiful the smiles of people are
than those written in the sky.

Just then, the morning sun
rose gently above the horizon.
