Yellowstone 국립공원의 Old Faithful

사실 이번에 Yellowstone 공원을 다녀오기 전까지는

막연히 분수처럼 뿜어져 나오는 Old Faithful 밖에 Yellowstone에 대해 아는 것이 없었다.

따라서 가장 기대를 하고 찾았던 곳이 Old Faithful이었다.

 

주차장은 Yellowstone 국립공원 애 어는 곳보다 크고 넓었다.

호텔이며 상가 같은 건물도 제법 규모를 갖추었고

주차장도 모자람이 없을 정도로 넉넉했다.

 

주차장에서 아내가 아침에 준비한 도시락을 먹었다.

어릴 적 소풍 가서 먹는 , 그런 환상적인 도시락이었다.

솔직히 이곳은 유명세에 비해서 내가 먹은 점심 도시락의 기억보다도 시원찮게 내 기억에 남을 것 같다.

점심 식사가 끝날 무렵, 사람들이 주차장 쪽으로 우르르 몰려왔다.

간헐천의 분수쇼가 끝난 모양이었다.

그때부터 한 시간 반 정도를 더 기다려야 분수쇼가 시작될 예정이었다.

분수쇼의 예상 시간이 대충 규칙적이어서 'Faithful'이라는 이름이 붙었다고 하니

충분한, 아니 너무 많은 시간이 우리 앞에 있었다.

 

온천수가 뿜어져 나오는 분수대(?) 주변으로 산책로가 형성되어 있고

언덕 건너편의 간헐천으로도 산책로는 이어져 있었다.

 

거의 한 시간 반을 지루하게 기다린 후, 분수대 밑 부분의 불이 부글부글 끓는 것 같더니

온천수가 하늘을 향해 뿜어져 올라왔다.

굉장한 장면을 기대했는데 나로서는 실망이 이만저만한 게 아니었다.

세계 각국으로부터 이 광경을 보러 수많은 사람이 온다고 하는데

솔직히 누가 방문에 대한 나의 조언을 구한다면 방문할 가치가 별로 없을 것 같다고 대답하겠다.

물론 내가 뭘 모르고 하는 소리다.

그래도 이 곳을 다녀왔으니 숙제는 했다는 안도감 같은 것이 들었다.

In fact, until I visited Yellowstone this time, the only thing I knew about the park was Old Faithful, the geyser that shoots up like a fountain. So naturally, the place I was most excited to visit was Old Faithful.

The parking lot was the largest and widest in the entire Yellowstone National Park. The hotel and shopping areas were fairly sizable, and the parking lot had more than enough space to accommodate everyone.

In the parking lot, I ate the packed lunch my wife had prepared in the morning. It was like the fantastic kind of lunch you would eat on a childhood picnic. Honestly, compared to its fame, I think this place will leave less of an impression on me than the memory of the lunch I ate. By the time we were finishing lunch, a crowd of people suddenly rushed toward the parking lot. It seemed like the geyser show had just ended. We would have to wait another hour and a half for the next show to begin.

The reason it’s called ‘Faithful’ is because the geyser’s eruption schedule is relatively regular, so we had plenty — or rather, too much time on our hands.

There was a walking trail around the fountain (?) where the hot spring water erupts, and it extended to another geyser over the hill.

After a tedious wait of almost an hour and a half, the bottom of the fountain began bubbling, and then the hot spring water shot up into the sky. I had expected a spectacular scene, but I was more than a little disappointed. They say people from all over the world come to witness this sight, but to be honest, if someone asked for my advice about visiting, I’d say it’s not really worth it. Of course, it’s probably because I don’t know any better.

Still, I felt a bit of relief, as if I had checked off something from a list, knowing that I had been here.
