집으로 - 동쪽을 향하여

집으로 -동쪽을 향하여

이번 여행은 처음에 한 달 살기 프로젝트를 대신하는 것으로 계획을 세웠지만

막내아들이 집에 오는 바람에 며칠 출발이 미루어졌다.

그리고 장인어른이 며칠 동안 애리조나에 다녀오실 일이 있어 집을 비우셔야 하기에

아내가 며칠 장모님과 함께 있어야 하는 연유로 일정을 앞 당겨 집에 돌아왔다.

결국 여행의 마지막 사흘은 동으로, 동으로 이동을 하는데 시간을 다 써버리고 말았다

 

어둠에 파묻힌 모텔을 떠나온 지 30 여분,

길 옆으로 아침해가 실눈을 뜨고 호수 저편에서 밝아오기 시작하는 것이 보였다.

오대호 호수 주변에서 밤을 지내고 동쪽에  있는 우리 집으로 오던 길에 일출을 맞았다.

잠시 길 옆 공원에 들어가 아침 기운을 눈으로 들여 마셨다.

 

다시 길을 떠났는데 점점 밝아지는 호수에서는 물안개가 피어오르고

그중 일부는 호수와 함께 이어지는 도로의 일부를 점령하고 있었다.

그리고 해가 뜬 뒤에는 도로 끝 편에서 직선으로 햇빛이 내 눈 속으로 빨려 들어왔다.

운전을 하기가 거의 불가능에 가까웠다.

 

해를 향해 운전하는 일의 어려움.

꽤 긴 시간을 해와 대면하며 운전을 했다.

 

그리고 다시 길이 없다시피 한 길로 들어서 물안개 피어오르는 호수를 바라보았다.

포장도 되어 있지 않은 길의 마지막에 집이 있었는데

사람이 살지 않은지 꽤 시간이 지난 것 같았다.

거의 이틀을 호수 곁으로 운전을 했지만 제대로 호수를 본 것은 그 아침이 처음이었던 같다.

 

그리고 호숫가에서 아침을 맞고 그 기운으로 쉬지 않고 집으로 달렸다.

여행의 끝에 돌아온 집.

평화, 안도.

 

세상에 집보다 더 좋은 곳이 있을까.

 

Heading Home - Toward the East

This trip was originally planned as a substitute for a "one-month living" project, but the departure was delayed by a few days because our youngest son came home.

Additionally, since my father-in-law had to go to Arizona for a few days and leave the house, my wife needed to stay with her mother for a while, which moved our schedule forward, and we returned home.

In the end, the last three days of the trip were spent moving east, east, and more eastward, with all the time used up on the road.

About 30 minutes after leaving the motel buried in darkness, I saw the morning sun peeking over the horizon, starting to brighten the other side of the lake. We spent the night near one of the Great Lakes, and on the way home to our eastward house, we were greeted by the sunrise.

I pulled into a nearby park for a moment to soak in the morning air with my eyes.

Back on the road, mist started to rise from the increasingly bright lake, and some of it began to spill onto the road running alongside the water. After the sun had fully risen, the sunlight came straight into my eyes from the end of the road, making it nearly impossible to drive.

The difficulty of driving toward the sun— I spent quite a long time facing the sunlight while driving.

And once again, we found ourselves on a barely-there road, looking out at the mist rising from the lake. At the end of an unpaved road, there was a house that seemed like no one had lived in for quite some time.

I had driven along the lake for nearly two days, but that morning was the first time I really saw the lake.

After greeting the morning by the lakeside, I drove straight home, without a break, fueled by the morning energy.

Finally, home at the end of the trip.

Peace, relief.
