서울함에서

어제 서울함 공원 찾았다.

서울함 공원은 망원 한강 공원 중 한 부분인 것 같은데

잠수함과 함정 두 척이 전시되어 일반인들이 관람할 수 있는 곳이다.

뉴욕에도 2 차세계 대전 때 활약했던 '인트레피드'호가 전시되어

일반에게 공개되고 있는데 운전을 하며 지나치기만 했지

직접 해군 함정에 승선한 것은 어제가 처음이다.

 

호기심을 갖고 서울함에 올랐다.

갑판 앞뒤로 페인트 작업을 하고 있었다.

 

배의 외부는 레이더와 함포, 기관총 같은 것들이 있고는

내부는 4 층으로 구성되어 있는데

미로를 다녀온 것 같이 묘사할 수 없을 정도로 복잡했다.

아마 문과적인 머리를 갖고 있는 내가

입체적인 공간을 제대로 묘사할 수 없을 정도로 배의 규모가 내게는 크게 느껴졌다는 말이다.

 

배 안을 관람하는 동안

나는 중년 부부 한 쌍만을 만날 수 있었는데

그것은 서울함 공원이 그다지 인기 있는 장소가 아니라는 걸 말해주는 것 같았다.

(그분은 배에서 내 사진을 찍어주었다.)

 

그럼에도 내가 서울함 공원을 찾은 것은

서울함의 16대 함장을 지낸 친구 J 때문이다.

언젠가 J를 만났을 때 두려움에 대한 이야기를 나누었는데

그는 항해를 할 때 안개가 짙으면 

가슴속에도 안개가 끼는 것 같다고 했다.

그 큰 배와 그 안에 탄 승조원들의 생명과 안전을 책임진 함장으로서

보이지 않는 전방의 상황은 늘 두려움의 원천이라고 했다.

 

그런 말을 들었을 때

해군 대령으로 서울함의 함장을 지냈다는 형식적인 J의 모습 속에 담겨 있는

인간의 모습을 만날 수 있었고,

그다음부터는 더 살가운 마음으로 그를 만날 수 있었다.

 

쌩떽쥐베리의 '어린 왕자'에 나오는 여우는

어린 왕자를 만나서 노란 밀밭에 관해 이야기를 한다.

어린 왕자를 만나기 전까지 밀밭은 여우에게 별 의미가 없었다.

그런데 어린 왕자를 만나고 난 뒤부터는

여우에게 밀밭의 노란색은 어린 왕자의 노란 머리 색을 연상시키므로

더 이상 평범하지 않고 특별한 것이 되었다는 것이다.

그런 관계를 작가는 '길들여지는 것(tame)'이라는 표현을 썼다.

 

세상을 살아가면서

껍데기끼리의 만남이 아니라

마음과 마음이 만나는 길들여지는 관계가 있다는 것은 얼마나 큰 축복인가.

 

한국에 와서 한강을 건너며 무심히 지나쳤던

서울함 공원이 배에 오르고 나서는 내게 특별한 곳이 되었다.

친구 J가 머물렀던 함장실에 잠시 머물렀다.

다른 장교나 수병들의 침실에 비해 다소 크고 호화(?)스러웠다.

방의 크기만큼이나 크고 짙었을 그의 두려움을

내 마음에 겹쳐보면서 한참을 머물렀다.

On the Seoul Battleship

Yesterday, I found Seoul Battleship Park. It seems to be a part of the Manwon Hangang Park, where one submarine and t2 battleships are exhibited for the public to view. In New York, the 'Intrepid' that played an active role during World War II is also on display for the public, but I had only passed by while driving and yesterday was my first time boarding a naval trap.

Filled with curiosity, I climbed aboard the Seoul Battleship. Paintwork was being done on the deck front and back.

The exterior of the ship had things like radar, cannons, and machine guns, while the interior was described as incredibly complex with four floors, like navigating a maze. Perhaps, with my literary mind, I felt the ship's size so overwhelmingly that I couldn't properly describe the three-dimensional space.

During the tour inside the ship, I encountered only one middle-aged couple, which seemed to indicate that Seoul Battleship Park is not a very popular place. (They took a picture of me on the ship.)

Nevertheless, I visited Seoul Battleship Park because of my friend J, who served as the 16th captain of the Seoul Battleship. When I met J someday and talked about fears during navigation, he mentioned that when the fog is thick, it feels like the fog is also settling in his chest. As the captain responsible for the lives and safety of the crew members on the large ship, he always considered the unseen situation ahead as the source of fear.

Upon hearing such words, I was able to meet the human side hidden within the formal appearance of J, who served as the captain of the Seoul Battleship. From then on, I could meet him with a warmer heart.

In "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the fox talks to the Little Prince about a golden field before meeting him. The field had no special meaning to the fox until he met the Little Prince. After their encounter, the yellow color of the field reminded the fox of the Little Prince's golden hair, making it no longer ordinary but special. The author uses the term "tame" to describe such a relationship.

As we live in this world, a taming relationship where hearts meet is truly a great blessing. The Seoul Battleship Park, which I casually passed by while crossing the Han River in Korea, became a special place for me after boarding the ship. I briefly stayed in the captain's room where my friend J stayed. It was somewhat larger and more luxurious than the bedrooms of other officers or enlisted personnel. While overlapping his fears in my heart, I lingered there for a while.
