Florida의 Key West - Hemingway 집과 고양이

Key West의 Hemingway House는 미국 플로리다주 Key West에 있는 역사적 집이자 박물관으로,

저명한 미국 소설가 어니스트 헤밍웨이(Ernest Hemingway)가 1930년대에 거주하며 창작 활동을 한 곳이다.

현재는 Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum으로 운영되며, Key West에서 가장 인기 있는 관광 명소 중 하나이다.

미국의 최남단이라는 상징적인 구조물에 들린 후 우리는 Hemingway집으로 발길을 향했다.

가는 길 주변에도 닭들이 간간이 눈에 띄었다.

어떤 집에는 도로에서 집으로 들어가는 문, 집으로 들어가는 문, 그리고 지붕에까지

닭 형상을 한 조형물이 있을 정도로 Key West를 결정하는 요인의 큰 지분을 닭이 차지하고 있음을 알 수 있다.

 

1931년부터 거주하기 시작했다고 하는 이 집에서 Hemingway와 두 번째 부인이 살았는데

부인 가족으로부터 선물을 받았다고 한다.

본채 옆에는 Hemingway가 작업실로 쓰던 건물이 있는데 코치 하우스를 개조한 것이다.

코치 하우스는 마구간과 마차를 보관하는 장소로 사용되던 곳인데

Hemingway는 2층을 개조해서 작업실로 사용했다.

본채와 분리되어 있어서 완전한 고립감을 가지고 글을 쓸 수 있을 거라는 짐작을 할 수 있을 것이다.

아래층은 현재 서점이 있는데 아내는 Hemingway의 소설 두 권을 샀다.

한국에 가면 친구에게  선물할 용도라고 한다.

이 작업실에서 쓰인 작품 중 하나가 '킬리만자로의 눈'이다.

Hemingway의 집에는 수영장이 딸려 있는데

Key West최초의 수영장이자 개인 주택 수영장이다.

Hemingway와 두 번째 부인은 1940년도에 이혼을 헀고, 부인은 이 집에서 1951년까지 살다가 사망했다.

 

Hemingway 집의 본채는 박물관으로 사용되고 있는데,

내부에는 침대를 비롯한 가구와, 유럽 골동품, 사진, 타자기 등 다양한 유물과 생활의 흔적이 전시되어 있다.

여기까지는 어느 작가나 예술가들의 박물관과 그리 큰 차별성이 보이지 않는다.

그런데 Hemingway 집에는 특별한 점이 하나 있는데

집 안팎으로 수십 마리의 고양이가 서식하고 있는 것이다.

어떤 사람들은 집을 둘러보는 것보다

고양이와 노는 일에 정신을 팔고 있는 모습을 여기저기서 볼 수 있다.

오죽하면 검은 고양이 한 마리는 침대 위에서 관람객들의 눈치도 보지 않고 낮잠을 즐기고 있을 정도이다.

조금 과장을 하자면, Hemingway 집에는 사람이 반, 고양이 반이라고 할 수 있을 정도이다.

 

참 기이한 일이 아닐 수 없었다.

특별히 Hemingway와 별로 친분이 업는 나에게는 그의 흔적보다는

셀 수도 없이 많은 고양이들에 대해 더 많은 관심이 쏠렸다.

여기에는 사실인지 아닌지는 모르겠으나 전설(?)이 내려온다.

 

전설의 시작은 아주 단순하다.

어느 날 Hemingway는 선원으로 알려진 친구에게서 고양이 한 마리를 선물로 받았다.

그런데 그 고양이는 발가락이 여섯 개였다고 한다.

물론 Hemingway는 이 고양이를 무척이나 사랑했을 것이다.

이 고양이는 번식력이 좋은 데다가 여섯 발가락의 유전형질이 우세해서

지금도 이 집에 서식하는 고양이 많은 수가 발가락이 여섯 개라고 한다.

나도 한 번 세어보려고 했는데 실패했다.

 

Hemingway는 고양이를 기르기보다는

함께 사는 존재, 즉 반려묘로 생각을 했던 것 같다.

그래서 자연스럽게 Hemingway 집은 고양이 왕국이 된 것이다.

지금도 집 뜰에는 고양이 아파트도 있고, 세상을 떠나 고양이 공동묘지도 있다.

(한 가지 Hemigway가 이혼을 하고 이 집을 떠날 때 고양이까지 두고 떠났는지가 궁금하다.)

 

내가 Hemingway와 별 친분이 없으니

그가 살았던 집을 방문하면서도 솔직히 별 감흥이 없었다.

그러나 Hemingway 집을 떠나며 내 머릿속에 남은 것은

그가 쓰던 낡은 타자기 몇 대,

수많은 고양이들, 특별히 흰 침대 시트 위에서 잠자던 검은 고양이 이미지가 전부였다.

오늘부터 마침 읽던 책을 마쳤으니,

아내가 친구를 위해 산 Hemingway 작품이나 읽어볼까나.

Key West, Florida – The Hemingway House and Its Cats

The Hemingway House in Key West is a historic home and museum located in Key West, Florida, USA. It is where the renowned American novelist Ernest Hemingway lived and worked during the 1930s. Today, it is operated as the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Key West.

After visiting the iconic landmark marking the southernmost point of the continental United States, we made our way to the Hemingway House. Along the way, chickens could be seen here and there. At some houses, chicken-shaped decorations could even be found on the gate from the street, the entrance to the house, and even on the roof. It was easy to see that chickens play a significant role in defining the character of Key West.

Hemingway began living in this house in 1931 with his second wife. The house was said to have been a gift from his wife’s family. Next to the main house stands a building that Hemingway used as his writing studio; it was a remodeled coach house. Originally, a coach house was used to store carriages and serve as a stable, but Hemingway converted the second floor into his workspace. Because it was separate from the main house, one can easily imagine that it allowed him to write in complete isolation.

The first floor is now used as a bookstore, where my wife bought two of Hemingway’s novels. She said they were meant as gifts for a friend back in Korea. One of the works written in this studio was “The Snows of Kilimanjaro.”
The Hemingway House also has a swimming pool, which was not only the first swimming pool in Key West but also the first private residential pool there. Hemingway and his second wife divorced in 1940, and she continued to live in the house until her death in 1951.

The main house is now used as a museum. Inside, various artifacts and traces of daily life are on display, including beds and other furniture, European antiques, photographs, and typewriters. Up to this point, it does not seem very different from museums dedicated to other writers or artists.
However, there is one very special feature of the Hemingway House: dozens of cats live both inside and outside the house.

In many places, you can see visitors more absorbed in playing with the cats than in looking around the house itself. One black cat was even enjoying a nap on a bed without paying any attention to the visitors at all. Slightly exaggerating, one might say that the Hemingway House is half people, half cats.

It was truly a curious sight. Since I do not feel any particular closeness to Hemingway himself, I found myself far more interested in the countless cats than in his personal traces. There is a legend—though I do not know whether it is true or not.

The legend begins very simply. One day, Hemingway received a cat as a gift from a friend who was known to be a sailor. That cat, it is said, had six toes. Naturally, Hemingway must have loved this cat dearly. Because the cat was highly fertile and the six-toed trait is genetically dominant, many of the cats still living in the house today are said to have six toes. I even tried counting them myself, but failed.

Rather than “keeping” cats, Hemingway seems to have thought of them as companions—true feline partners in life. And so, quite naturally, the Hemingway House became a kingdom of cats. Even today, there are cat “apartments” in the garden, and after they pass away, a communal cat cemetery as well.
(I can’t help but wonder whether Hemingway, when he divorced and left this house, also left the cats behind.)

Since I have no particular attachment to Hemingway, I honestly felt little emotional impact while visiting the house where he once lived. Yet as I left the Hemingway House, what remained in my mind were just a few of his old typewriters, the many cats, and especially the image of a black cat sleeping on a white bed sheet.

I happened to finish the book I had been reading today, so perhaps I’ll try reading one of the Hemingway works my wife bought for her friend.
