Barefoot Beach에서

어제는 플로리다의 Bonita Springs에서 겨울을 보내고 계시는

Dr. Lee& Dr. Cho 부부를 찾아 뵙고 하룻 밤을 묵었다.

우리가 도착하자 그 동네에서 일몰을 볼 수 있는 Barefoot Beach로 안내를 하셨다.

호화 주택 단지를 지나고 집들이 없는 곳까지 가니 주차장이 있었다.

하루 종일 날이 흐렸고, 날도 쌀쌀해서 그리 붐비지는 않았다.

구름과 수평선 사이에 아침처럼 빈틈이 있었는데

해가 잠시 그 사이로 얼굴을 내밀었다.

하얀 모래가 인상적이었다.

젊은 시절 바라보는 일몰과 지금 이 나이가 되어서 바라보는 일몰 사이에는 무슨 차이가 있을까?

나이가 들면서 일몰의 색에 처연함이 더 짙어지는 것 같다.

나만 그런가?

 

Barefoot Beach라는 이름처럼 아내는 맨발로 바닷가를 걸었다.

 

At Barefoot Beach

Yesterday, we spent a night in Bonita Springs, Florida, visiting
Dr. Lee and Dr. Cho, who are spending the winter there.

As soon as we arrived, they took us to Barefoot Beach,
a place in their neighborhood known for its sunsets.

We passed through a gated area of luxurious homes
until the houses disappeared altogether,
and a parking lot appeared at the end of the road.

The sky had been overcast all day,
and the air was cool,
so the beach was not crowded.

Between the clouds and the horizon,
there was a narrow gap, like the opening of a morning sky,
and for a brief moment
the sun revealed its face through it.

The white sand left a lasting impression.

What is the difference, I wonder,
between watching a sunset in one’s youth
and watching it now, at this age?

As the years pass,
the colors of sunset seem to grow more poignant,
more quietly sorrowful.

Is it just me?

True to its name, Barefoot Beach,
my wife walked along the shore with her shoes off,
barefoot on the sand.
