Miami Beach에서 해맞이

Miami Beach는 미국 플로리다주 남동부에 위치한 해안 도시로,

마이애미 도시 본체와는 Biscayne Bay(비스케인 만)를 사이에 두고 동쪽 barrier island(방벽섬)에 자리 잡고 있다.

‘Miami’라고 하면 흔히 떠올리는 흰모래와 해변, 야자수, 아르데코 건물, 야간 문화 등이

실제로는 대부분 Miami Beach에 있다는 것을 이곳에 와서야 알았다.

한마디로 Miami Beach는 내가 살고 있는 Rockaway와 비슷한 형태를 하고 있다.

South Beach(소비치) 중심으로 세계적인 관광지로 알려진 Miami Beach는

해변, 산책로, 비치 바, 런닝,자전거 코스 등이 잘 갖춰져 있으며

여름철뿐 아니라 겨울에도 온화한 날씨로 인기를 끌고 있다.

 

1920~30년대 아르데코 양식의 건물이 밀집되어 있는 Art Deco Historic District는

파스텔톤 외관, 네온사인, 곡선형 구조물이 특이해서 사람들의 발길을 끄는 곳인데

밤에 그저 스치듯 지나치고 말았다.

Miami Beach는 특별히 쿠바와 지리적으로 가까워서

쿠바, 중남미에 많은 사람들이 찾으며,

유럽, 뉴욕 등에서 온 이민자·관광객이 많다.

어느 도시보다. 스패니쉬를 쓰는 사람들을 많이 찾아볼 수 있었다.

 

어제 아침엔 우리가 묵은 호텔에서 길을 건너 2-3 분이면 닿을 수 있는 Miami Beach의 비치를 찾아갔다.

바다로 가기 위해서는 작은 둔덕을 넘어야 했는데

모래밭이 시작되는 곳에 자전거 길을 겸한 산책로가 형성되어 있었는데

실제로 얼마나 긴지는 모르겠다.

산책로 옆에는 야자수와 여러 품종의 나무와 꽃들이 단정하게 자리 잡고

사람들의 눈을 끌고 있었다.

 

바다에 나가 보니 온통 검은 구름이 수평선 위를 덮고 있었다.

구름과 수평선 사이에 작은 틈이 있었는데

그 모양이 마치 실눈을 뜨고 있는 듯했다.

실눈 사이로 붉은 눈동자가 나타날 때가 되니

사람들이 바다로 나와 연신 사진을 찍었다.

내가 늘 보는 그런 황홀한 일출은 아니었지만

빛이 드러나자 바다는 초록빛을 띠기 시작했다.

예뻤다.

Rockaway 바다가 갖지 못한 그 물빛에 반해 한참을 바라보았다.

Miami Beach는 내 머릿속에 얌저한 푸른 물빛으로 기억될 것이다.

 

Sunrise at Miami Beach

Miami Beach lies along the southeastern coast of Florida,
resting on a barrier island east of the city of Miami,
with Biscayne Bay quietly stretched between the two.

When people speak of “Miami,” the images that surface—
white sand, open beaches, palm trees swaying in the wind,
Art Deco façades, and a lively nightlife—
are, in truth, mostly found here, in Miami Beach.
It was something I only fully understood after arriving.

In that sense, Miami Beach resembles Rockaway, where I now live.
A city shaped by water, sand, and a narrow strip of land
caught between ocean and bay.

Known worldwide as a destination, especially around South Beach,
Miami Beach offers more than just a shoreline.
Beaches flow naturally into promenades,
which give way to beach bars, running paths, and bike lanes.
With its mild climate, the city remains welcoming
not only in summer but throughout the winter months.

The Art Deco Historic District, dense with buildings from the 1920s and ’30s,
stands out for its pastel-colored exteriors, neon lights,
and smooth, rounded lines.
It is a place that invites lingering glances—
though for us, it was something we only brushed past in the dark.

Geographically close to Cuba, Miami Beach draws many visitors
from Cuba and across Central and South America,
as well as immigrants and travelers from Europe and New York.
More than in any other city I have known,
Spanish seemed to move easily through the streets,
spoken without hesitation.

Yesterday morning, we crossed the street from our hotel
and within two or three minutes reached the beach.
To meet the ocean, we had to step over a low dune.
Where the sand began, a long promenade unfolded—
doubling as a bike path—
its true length impossible to measure at a glance.

Beside it, palm trees and carefully tended varieties of trees and flowers
stood in quiet order,
catching the eye without demanding attention.

Out at the water, dark clouds stretched across the horizon.
Between the clouds and the sea lay a narrow opening,
shaped like half-closed eyes.

When the moment arrived and a reddish pupil appeared within that slit of light,
people drifted toward the shore,
lifting their cameras again and again.

It was not the kind of overwhelming sunrise I am accustomed to.
Yet as the light revealed itself,
the sea slowly took on a greenish hue.
It was beautiful.

I stood there for a long while, absorbed by that color—
a shade the waters of Rockaway do not possess.

In my memory, Miami Beach will remain
a place of restrained light
and gentle blue-green waters.
