참 신기하다

어제 아침 주일 미사를 가던 길에

Rockaway Blvd. 127 스트릿 근처에서 참 이상한 벚나무를 발견했다.

도로 중앙에 벚나무가 줄을 지어 서 있는데

그중 서너 그루는 한 줄기에서 벚꽃과 아울러 흰꽃이 피어 있었다.

벚꽃은 알겠는데 문제의 흰꽃의 이름은 확실치 않다.

내 얄팍한 지식으로는 조팝나무 꽃인 것 같은데 그게 맞는지에 대해서는 영 자신이 없다.

 

어제 보았던 신기한 벚꽃 나무를 만나러

오늘 아침 해변 산책을 마치고 127 스트릿으로 갔다.

어제 강한 바람 때문이지 많은 꽃잎이 떨러 지기 했어도

아직 분홍 벚꽃과 흰 조팝나무(?) 꽃이 한 나무에 사이좋게 어울려 있는 것을 볼 수 있었다.

가만히 살펴보면 누군가가 벚꽃나무에 조팝나무 가지를 꺾꽂이를 해 놓은 것 같은 흔적을 볼 수 있었다.

그런데 조팝나무 꽃이 핀 가지도 벚꽃나무와 똑같은 색과 형태를 하고 있었다.

나로서는 이해하기가 힘이 들었다.

세강은 온통 신비하고도 신기한 일이 참 많은 것 같다.

물론 누군가는 그것을 잘 이해하고 설명할 수 있겠지만 ----

 

It was very strange.

 

On my way to Sunday Mass yesterday morning,
I found a strange cherry tree near Rockaway Blvd. and 127th Street.

There were rows of cherry trees in the middle of the road.
Among them, three or four trees had both cherry blossoms and white flowers on the same branch.

I know cherry blossoms, but I wasn’t sure what the white flowers were.
With my little knowledge, I thought they might be spirea flowers, but I wasn’t confident.

This morning, after my walk on the beach,
I went back to 127th Street to see the strange trees again.

Even though many petals had fallen because of yesterday’s strong wind,
I could still see pink cherry blossoms and white flowers blooming together on one tree.

Looking closely, I saw signs that someone might have grafted a spirea branch onto the cherry tree.
But the branch with white flowers looked just like the cherry tree’s own branches.

It was hard for me to understand.
There are so many mysterious and amazing things in the world.
Of course, someone might be able to explain it well — but not me.
